Apply for identity card because of other name change
Source: Serviceportal Rheinland-PfalzIf your first name or surname changes, your ID card is invalid. Reasons for other name changes are, for example
- Adoption
- Sorting of first names
- Declaration in accordance with the law on self-determination with regard to gender entry (SBGG)
In this case, you must apply for a new identity card if you are 16 years old or older.
There is one exception: as long as you have a valid passport document, i.e. passport or temporary passport, with the new name, there is no obligation to apply for a new ID card.
Online function of the ID card
All ID cards automatically have the online ID function; this function is automatically activated for ID cards issued from July 2017. If you have set a six-digit PIN of your own choice, you can use it to identify yourself to authorities and companies for services offered online with a high level of trust. You can use the online ID card after your 16th birthday.
When you apply for your ID card, the prints of your two index fingers are stored on the chip of the card. Children under the age of 6 are excluded from this regulation.
