Register for a Kolleg
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzThe Kolleg is an institution of the second educational path. It offers you, as an adult or adult student with professional experience, the opportunity to acquire the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) after a three-year course of education. They go through a one-year introductory phase in the class and a two-year qualification phase in the course system.
The Kolleg is a day school and the right choice for you if you want to concentrate fully on the school. Since the lessons take place in the morning and partly also in the afternoon, a simultaneous full employment is not possible.
You apply directly to your chosen Research Training Group and prove with the necessary documents that you meet the requirements (see below). If you are unsure, please let us advise you.
With the Berufsreife qualification, you must first take part in a six-month preliminary course, which begins on 1 February. Admission may take place via an entrance examination. After successful completion, they are accepted into the introductory phase.
With the qualified lower secondary school leaving certificate, you will be admitted directly to the introductory phase, if necessary after passing the entrance examination.
With a Fachhochschulreife, you enter the introductory phase without an entrance examination or even, if you can prove sufficient knowledge of a second foreign language, directly into the qualification phase. The course is then shortened to two years.
Please send your application form to your chosen Research Training Group. These are:
- Staatsl. Koblenz-Kolleg und -Abendgymnasium, Koblenz
- Priv. Ketteler-Kolleg und -Abendgymnasium, Main
- Staatsl. Eifel-Kolleg, Neuerburg
- Staatsl. Pfalz-Kolleg and -Abendgymnasium Speyer
To be admitted to the Research Training Group, you must meet the following requirements:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have obtained the qualified lower secondary school leaving certificate or an equivalent qualification.
- You can prove that you have completed vocational training or a regular professional activity lasting at least two years. Alternatively, the management of a family household can also be taken into account. Unemployment certified by the Employment Agency can be credited for up to one year, possibly longer for pre-course participants.
- They do not already have the general university entrance qualification.
- You have not tried a high school exam more than once – even in another federal state – without success.
You have passed an entrance exam. If the grades in German, mathematics and English are "satisfactory" or better in the certificate of the qualified lower secondary school leaving certificate, you usually do not need to take an entrance examination. If your knowledge of German is still incomplete, a language test may be required before the exam.
You must submit the following documents with your application for membership:
- a curriculum vitae with a photograph,
- a certified copy of the leaving certificate of your last general education school (e.g. Realschule plus) and the vocational school,
- certified copies of a vocational qualification certificate (e.g. journeyman's, skilled worker or assistant's certificate) or other certificates and certificates of your professional activity,
an informal explanation of whether you have ever tried to be admitted to a college or evening high school.
There are no fees.

The processing of your application takes a maximum of two weeks.

Attendance at the Kolleg is funded according to BAföG. The support is granted as a grant, provided that the conditions are met, and is therefore not repayable later. In the preliminary course, the support is parent-dependent, responsible here is the municipality in which the parents of the students have their residence. From the introductory phase of the Kolleg, support is provided regardless of the income of the parents. Responsible for parent-independent support are the offices for educational support at the location of the college: the city administrations in Koblenz, Mainz or Speyer; for Neuerburg, the district administration of the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Bitburg.
