Specialist dentists may only call themselves dentists who have successfully completed at least three years of further training after their license to practice medicine or professional license and the completion of a general dental year. The training can only be completed at approved training centres under the direction of a specialist dentist authorised to undertake further training.

Oral surgeons have specialized expertise in implantations, surgical therapies on the upper and lower jaw, treatments of the oral mucosa and soft tissues in the jaw area as well as traumatological treatments (e.g. reinsertion of teeth after accidents, jaw fracture, wound care).

Orthodontists have specialized expertise in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of malpositions of the jaw and teeth.

The training to become a specialist dentist lasts 3 years (full-time), and a general dental year must be completed before the training. Part-time training is possible. Up to three years of continuing education can be completed in a department of a higher education institution for dental, oral and maxillofacial medicine, in a department of a clinic or a comparable institution. Even in the practice of a registered specialist dentist, the training can be completed in whole or in part, provided that the established specialist dentist is authorised for further training and the practice is recognised as a training centre. A list of which clinics and practices are authorized for further training is available from the LZK. The start of the training must be registered with the LZK.
