Extending a residence permit to exercise a self-employed activity

The responsibility lies with the foreigners authority of the district administration and the city administration of the independent city.
- Possession of a residence permit
The residence permit must still be valid and have been issued in accordance with § 21 AufenthG.

- Audit report form (residence permit according to § 21 para. 1 AufenthG)
The audit report must be prepared by a tax consultant, auditor or lawyer with relevant professional experience (e.g. as a specialist lawyer for tax law). It should always be provided with a round stamp.
In the case of entrepreneurs and self-employed persons, the audit report is used to provide proof of a secure livelihood and the economic success of the entrepreneurial activity. - Proof of a secure livelihood (residence permit in accordance with § 21 Para. 5 AufenthG)
Freelancers (e.g. artists or language teachers) do not have to submit a test report. Other documents must be submitted as proof of a secure livelihood: tax assessment notices, net profit calculation by the tax consultant, bank statements showing a regular inflow of funds, accounts with gallery owners and auction houses and similar.
Documents must be submitted as originals and copies. - Tenancy agreement or proof of home ownership

- Health insurance
Proof of a secure livelihood also includes adequate health insurance cover. Those with statutory health insurance are adequately insured. Those with private health insurance must pay attention to the type and scope of their health insurance. For more information, please read the information sheet.
- Adequate pension provision
Only if you have already reached the age of 45:
An offer (original and copy) of a private pension insurance policy must be submitted, which is valid at the age of 67.- a monthly pension of EUR 1,109.88 (for at least 12 years)
- or assets of EUR 159,823. Alternatively, proof can also be provided by current assets.

It is best to make an appointment 4 to 6 weeks before the previous residence permit expires. As a rule, the residence permit is affixed to the passport as a label when you make an appointment. Electronic residence permits can currently only be issued in exceptional cases.
