If a person dies on a foreign sea-going vessel, this is subject to the same rules as a death abroad. If necessary, the death will be certified in the country where the death occurred.
You can have the death subsequently certified in Germany. This means that the death will also be entered in a German death register.
Subsequent certification is necessary if you wish to order further death certificates in Germany.
The subsequent notarization applies to deceased persons
- with German nationality
- with domestic residence
- without domestic residence
- refugees recognized in Germany
- stateless persons recognized in Germany
The registry office in which the deceased person was last domiciled is responsible. If the deceased person never had a place of residence in Germany, the registry office I in Berlin is responsible.
