Orthoptics is a special field of ophthalmology. Its main task is to prevent, diagnose and treat strabismus, visual impairment, eye tremors and eye movement disorders. As part of their work, orthoptists check vision, the position of the eyes and binocular cooperation.
Areas of application are
- orthoptic facilities at university eye clinics, general hospitals, neurological clinics and ophthalmologists in private practice
- Early intervention centers, rehabilitation facilities, special schools and facilities for the visually impaired and blind.
The profession of orthoptist is regulated in Germany. This is regulated by law.
This means that in order to work as an orthoptist in Germany, you must apply for a state license. With this permit, you can use the professional title "orthoptist" and work in the profession.
The professional license is issued after passing the state examination or recognition of the foreign professional qualification if the health and personal suitability (reliability) and the knowledge of the German language required for practicing the profession.
