The Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS) launched the "Interdisciplinary Social Policy Research (FIS)" funding network in 2016.

Purpose and object:

With the FIS, the BMAS is pursuing the goal of strengthening independent social policy research. This should enable scientists to establish themselves in the field of social policy research and universities to expand existing structures in the field of social policy and social law research or to create new ones.

Funding is provided for projects in the following disciplines

  • Economics (VWL),
  • law,
  • history,
  • social ethics,
  • political sciences and
  • sociology.

Recipients of grants:

Researchers at higher education institutions, for example at universities and universities of applied sciences.

Type and scope:

Research funding is provided by means of various temporary funding instruments. These include, in particular, funding announcements for the funding of endowed professorships, junior research groups and projects:

1. endowed professorships: funding for endowed professorships at universities and universities of applied sciences for a period of up to 5 years. Funding is subject to follow-up financing by the respective federal state.

2. funding for a limited number of junior research groups to support doctoral and post-doctoral students.

3. funding for flagship projects in the field of social policy research.
